Counselor's Corner

My name is Jeanette Hughes, and I am a native Vandal! I went to school all 13 years in Van ISD and also taught 1st grade here for 14 years. I earned my bachelor's degree in teaching through UT Tyler and my master's degree in school counseling through Lamar University. My husband and I have three children, one grandson, and three cats. I love to read and I enjoy my back porch rocker very much. I am a Harry Potter fanatic, love learning random facts, and enjoy watching movies. I also collect flamingos!

My philosophy of school counseling is this: I am an advocate for both students and families. I will assist all students in achieving their highest abilities. I will provide opportunities to help students acquire academic, career, and social-emotional competencies necessary to achieve life-long success.

Community Services:

Andrew Center- Andrews Center was established to offer help and hope to those living with mental health and intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) and challenges. They help patients determine and understand what their unique challenges are and then assist them in finding care. They provide these services to residents of Smith, Wood, Rains, Van Zandt and Henderson counties.

Child Advocacy Center (CAC)- A children’s advocacy center is the ONE non-profit to serve as the first stop for children entering the justice system because of suspected sexual abuse, severe physical abuse, and those who have witnessed a violent crime.

Loaves and Fishes- Van Community Ministries is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation providing assistance to low-income residents. Our services are available to families in need residing in Van Independent School District. We currently distribute supplemental food, twice monthly, to approximately 400 households. These services are made possible through grants, fundraisers, and donations of money, food, and volunteer hours from the greater Van community. In hard times, everyone can use a hand, and we want to be that open hand for our community.
