All Van ISD staff members met on August 5th for Convocation to kick off a TOTALLY TUBULAR new school year - 80s style! To start the morning, each campus got together to tease their hair, paint signs, and practice their dance moves before heading to the auditorium for their grand entrance. Convocation was full of good music, big hair, and a few surprise performances from our very own staff members!
First up, Vince the Vandal and Mr. Dunn danced onto the stage before Mr. Dunn officially welcomed back the staff for the 2024-2025 school year!
The first surprise... who was inside the Vince the Vandal costume??? Mr. Jason Johnson!
Next, our emcees, Mr. Nathan Daniels and Mr. Kevin Reed, were introduced before Prince himself came on stage for a special performance singing Purple Rain!
For the next performance, our principals were welcomed on stage for an 80s style dance-off! Principals had to show their best dance moves, including the worm, the snake, and the moonwalk. Mrs. Joanna Stewart from J.E. Rhodes Elementary was declared the winner by a crowd vote.
It wouldn't be an 80s theme without some big hair! Each campus selected one staff member to compete in the big hair contest. Mrs. Crystal Whatley from Van Junior High was named the winner by our emcees!
As last year's spirit stick winners, J.E. Rhodes performed a "live music video" to "Girls Just Want to Have Fun".
Lastly, New Kids on the Block visited and our staff had a dance-off to "Thriller"!
For the second year in a row, J.E. Rhodes Elementary won the spirit stick, earning them a GNARLY luncheon sponsored by the Van ISD Education Foundation.
Thank you to our Van ISD Curriculum Team and Spirit Squad for all the planning and hard work that made this day possible, and thank you to The Church of Garden Valley for sponsoring a delicious BBQ lunch for our entire staff!
